Both vibe coding and agentic engineering start from the same place: using AI to write code faster than a human alone could. But the terms have started to split apart, and the distinction matters more than it might seem — especially once you're sitting across from an investor.
Vibe Coding: Speed Over Structure
Vibe coding, in its purest form, is prompting an AI tool in plain language and accepting what it generates with minimal review. It's extremely fast, and it's genuinely how a huge share of early-stage products get their first version built. The tradeoff is that it optimizes for "does this work right now," not "will this hold up under scale, scrutiny, or attack."
Agentic Engineering: Speed With Discipline
Agentic engineering uses the same AI tooling, but wraps it in real engineering process — code review, testing, architecture decisions made deliberately rather than emergently, and security considered from the start rather than patched in afterward. The AI still writes a large share of the code. The difference is that a structured process governs how that code gets reviewed, tested, and integrated.
Why Investors Are Starting to Care
As AI-generated code has become the norm rather than the exception, technical due diligence has evolved with it. Investors and their advisors are increasingly asking not just "did you use AI to build this," but "what process governed how that AI-generated code got reviewed before it shipped." A founder who can answer that clearly is signaling something important: that they understand the difference between building fast and building on solid ground.
This isn't about avoiding AI tools — virtually everyone building today uses them. It's about whether there's a disciplined process wrapped around that usage.
What This Means Practically
If you're heading into a raise, or you're at the stage where technical due diligence is likely, it's worth an honest audit of your own codebase before someone else finds the gaps. That doesn't mean abandoning the speed AI coding tools gave you — it means adding the review, testing, and security layers that turn a fast build into a defensible one.
That's the real difference between vibe coding and agentic engineering: not the tools you use, but the discipline you wrap around them.
